Two weekends ago, I went to Birmingham with my boyfriend. We spent the day wandering around town looking in the shops, in which I invested in some rather splendid new shoes. We then decided to go over to the Mailbox for dinner. If you aren't from Birmingham, The Mailbox is one of the nicest bits of Birmingham. It's right by the canal and has a lovely little selection of restaurants and bars, as well as a few more exclusive shops like Harvey Knicks.

We settled on dinner at Red Peppers in the end, as it has a vast menu with something for everyone. Me and him have very different tastes when it comes to food so it fitted us perfectly. As you can imagine, after a warm Saturday in the city, the place was heaving, so the waitress told us we had an hour wait. That wasn't a problem as a space quickly cleared on two bar stools perched at the end of the bar and we settled in for the wait with magaritas and beer.

In the end, I went for Smoked Salmon Risotto with mascarpone, lemon and peas. It was light but nice and flavoursome which is exactly what I like. I thought it was probably quite an easy dish to recreate and I'll definitely be trying it soon.

I really enjoy eating in Red Peppers because everytime I've been in there the place is always rammed. Some people aren't keen on busy restaurants but I love it, after all, why would you want to eat in an empty restaurant?
